A recent BBC News investigation has sent shockwaves through the UK motoring community, revealing that a vehicle is stolen every four minutes in the UK. High Tech thieves are now using sophisticated signal-amplification equipment to bypass security systems and drive away with a vehicle in just 35 seconds.
At KG Key Services Auto & Domestic Locksmiths, we have spent over 30 years keeping drivers safe across Scotland, from Falkirk to Edinburgh, and Glasgow to Livingston. As approved members of the Master Locksmiths Association (MLA) and the Auto Locksmith Association (ALA), we understand how these criminal networks operate. More importantly, we know how to help keep your vehicles safer.
Here is what you need to know about the BBC report and the practical, layered security steps you can take today to keep your car or van safe.
The 35-Second Threat: How Modern Vehicle Theft Works
Traditional lock-picking has largely been replaced by digital hacking. The BBC investigation highlighted how organised networks target newer vehicles using two main methods:
- Key Fob Relaying: Thieves stand outside your home with an amplifier that picks up the wireless signal from your car key inside the house. They relay this signal to a second criminal standing next to your vehicle, tricking the car into thinking the key is present.
- OBD Port Hacking: Once inside, criminals plug a device into the vehicle’s On-Board Diagnostics (OBD) port to program a blank key fob in seconds, bypassing the factory immobiliser.
How to Protect Your Vehicle: The Key Solutions
To defeat high-tech thieves, you need a combination of digital habits and physical barriers. The harder a vehicle is to compromise, the more likely a thief is to walk away.
- Secure Your Wireless Signals
If your vehicle has keyless entry, your fobs are constantly broadcasting a signal.
- Use Faraday Pouches: Store all keys (including spares) in a signal-blocking Faraday bag when you are at home. This blocks the radio frequencies and prevents relay attacks. Manufacturers, through pressure from the ABI & Police, have started manufacturing vehicle key systems to deactivate (car wont start) when wireless access keys remain stationary for a predetermined period. i.e. motion sensitive keys.
- Deactivate Keyless Entry: Many modern manufacturers allow you to turn off the wireless proximity signal via the dashboard menu or a specific button sequence on the fob. Give us a call or check with your dealership.
- Introduce Physical Deterrents
Thieves want a quick, silent getaway. Visible, physical security forces them to spend time making noise, which they hate.
- Steering Wheel & Tyre Locks: A high-quality, visible steering lock makes your vehicle an unattractive target from the outset.
- Van Hooklocks and Slamlocks: If you drive a commercial vehicle, factory locks are rarely enough. We highly recommend calling us to supply and fit physical aftermarket hooklocks / deadlocks or slamlocks to protect expensive tools and stock.
- Update Your Vehicle’s Digital Security
If you suspect someone has targeted your vehicle or you have recently bought a used car, it is vital to wipe old digital profiles.
- Key Recoding: An expert locksmith can clear lost or stolen keys from your car’s ECU memory. If someone, then tries to use an old or cloned key, the car simply won’t start.
